Creation
The Department of Applied Mathematics was established in pursuance of the decision of the Board of the Ministry of Education and Science of the USSR of June 4, 1971 "On the organization and reorganization of departments and faculties of universities of the Ministry of Education and Science of the USSR" by order No. 1409 of September 18, 1971 at the Lviv Polytechnic Institute of the Order of Lenin. The prerequisite for the creation of the department was the organizational and structural design of a new scientific school on the problems of mathematical modeling of scientific, technological and social processes and their numerical study, as well as the wider use of electronic computing by specialized and general technical departments in the educational process and design and development.
The first head of the department
Roman Slonevsky, Associate Professor of the Department of Higher Mathematics, was appointed the first Head of the Department. The reason for his appointment was his work in the field of mathematical modeling of natural processes and the possibilities of their numerical study. The staff of the newly created department consisted of 19 teachers. The newly created department continued the training of mathematical engineers in the specialty 0647 "Applied Mathematics", which began in 1969 on the basis of the Department of Higher Mathematics (headed by Professor Mykhailo Ignatiev).
The first graduation
The first graduation of specialists in Applied Mathematics took place in 1974. These specialists are able to build mathematical models of specific systems and processes and investigate them using modern mathematical tools and computer technology.
Cooperation
The period of the 80s can be characterized as a period of close cooperation with the Institute of Cybernetics of the USSR Academy of Sciences, including the MMS SPCS and the Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics. The implementation of a number of contractual works with these institutions contributed to the improvement of the qualification level of the department's staff in the field of software and allowed to conclude contracts for students to undergo pre-graduate practice at the SPKB MMS of the Institute of Cybernetics.
The 4th academic building in the 70s and 80s
The first defense of the master's thesis
In 1996, the first defense of the master's thesis in the specialty "Applied Mathematics" took place. Since 1992, after the introduction of a two-stage system of training, the first enrollment of students in the bachelor's program in Applied Mathematics was carried out, and in 1996 the first graduation of bachelors, and in 1998 the second graduation of masters in Applied Mathematics. The department was the first in the Western region of Ukraine to introduce a one and a half year training period for specialists and masters at the expense of the university.
Social Informatics
Taking into account the needs of the region for professionals in the field of mathematical modeling of socio-economic processes and their numerical research, since 1997 the department has also been training specialists in the specialty 7.080204 "Social Informatics", and since 2003 masters 8.080204 "Social Informatics" under programs developed jointly with the Taras Shevchenko National University.
Branches of the department
In cooperation with the Institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine of the Western Scientific Center, branches of the department were established at the Y. Pidstryhach Institute of Applied Problems of Mechanics and Mathematics and the Institute of Condensed Matter Physics. Today, the department's branches employ 8 doctors of sciences and professors. Among them are leading scientists of Ukraine, recognized in the world - Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Kushnir R.M., Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Pelykh V.O., Doctors of Physics and Mathematics Tokarchuk M.V., Yasinsky A.V., Yadzhak M.V., Ilnytsky Y.M., Bryk T.M.

Applied mathematics and computer science
Since 2008, the department has been training bachelors in the Applied Mathematics and Informatics program.
Accreditation
In 2012, all specialties of the department were accredited, in particular: 6.040301 - applied mathematics 6.040302 - computer science. 7.04030101 - Applied Mathematics; 7.04030203 - Social Informatics. 8.04030101 - applied mathematics; 8.04030103 - mathematical and computer modeling (licensed); 8.04030204 - information and communication technologies (licensed); 8.04030203 - social informatics.
Competencies of specialists
Educational and professional training programs for specialists in these areas and specialties, developed at the Department of Applied Mathematics, provide the competencies of a specialist formulated in the educational and qualification characteristics. These include the ability to formalize a problem, develop a mathematical model of a process, choose or develop a numerical solution method, evaluate its effectiveness (convergence, accuracy, stability), build algorithms, implement them as application software on a computer or in a computer network, and set up a software package to solve a real-world problem. Graduates are proficient in system programming, develop individual modules of system software, support computing and information processes in modern computer systems with their administration in computer networks. Educational and professional training programs provide a sufficient level of economic and humanitarian training for the modern labor market. All of this enables our graduates (including an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, several dozen doctors and candidates of sciences) to become qualified specialists in applied mathematics and computer science and find themselves in the labor markets of Ukraine and the world.
Financial engineering
From the 2021-2022 academic year, the department has started recruiting applicants for the educational and professional program "Applied Mathematics and Informatics" with a specialization in Financial Engineering.
